Whatsminer Machine Types: M3X, M5X, M6X and M7X Models and Variants

"An M50S" is not enough information to order a hash board, pick a firmware file or decide whether two machines can share parts. Whatsminers are identified by a model, a tier and a variant code, and the variant is what matters on the bench. This guide explains the naming and then lists every model and variant we track, series by series.

Reading a Whatsminer model name

Take M30S++_VH20:

• M30 is the model. The first digit is the generation — M3X, M5X, M6X, M7X — and the second digit places it within that generation.
• S++ is the tier. Within a model, the base unit, S, S+ and S++ step up in hash rate and, usually, efficiency.
• VH20 is the variant. It identifies the specific hash-board and chip revision the unit was built with. Two M30S++ machines with different variant codes can have different chip counts, chip bins and PSU requirements.

You will find the full name on the machine label, in the Miner Type column of WhatsMinerTool, and encoded in the hostname on the miner's status page — M30S_VE21.H6OS-CB4V10.P221C-... reads as model and variant, then control board, then PSU.

Cooling types

Each series has air-cooled, hydro-cooled and immersion models. Within a generation the numbering follows a loose pattern — lower numbers air, middle numbers hydro, higher numbers immersion — but it is not strict (the M39 is air-cooled), so use the tables rather than the pattern.

A range such as VH10–VH90 means every step of ten in between; where a step is missing from the list, it is missing from our records too. This is a working reference, not MicroBT's catalogue — new variants ship regularly, so if a label shows a code that is not here, that is expected.

Why the variant matters for repair

• Parts. Hash boards, and often PSUs, are specific to a variant. See our spare parts guide for the PSU families and which ones interchange.
• Consolidation. Boards moved between units must match model, variant, ASIC type, chip count and TH rating — and ideally chip bin — or you risk error codes and hardware failure. The variant code is the first thing to check, and the ASIC count per domain printed by the boost controller is the second.
• Firmware. Recovery images are matched to the control board (H3, H6OS, H616) rather than the variant, but the variant determines which chips the firmware must support — the source of error 201-8410 after an SD recovery on older units. See the firmware guide.
• Warranty. Serial numbers are per unit and per board. A consolidated unit sent in under warranty ends the warranty on both the unit and the donor — see the warranty guide.
